Cornus kousa ‘Satomi’ produces the most glorious, windmill-shaped, large, pink ‘flowers’. These ‘flowers’ are actually modified bracts and dark centres in the middle are the actual flowers. It is particularly striking in spring and attracts a lot of attention, as the display can be seen from quite a distance due to the size of the pink bracts. This shrub has a spreading oval shaped canopy that can eventually be formed into a small tree.
The drooping foliage of Cornus kousa ‘Satomi’ is a talking point as the plant gives the impression of requiring water, but this is simply the way it grows. The dark green leaves turn an orange-red to a very dark, burgundy-red in autumn and during the late summer there are an abundance of small, red, edible fruits which will attract a variety of birds to the garden.
