Crataegus coccinea – Scarlet Hawthorn

In stock

Crataegus coccinea is a small, deciduous Scarlet Hawthorn that originates from North America with a fairly upright form.  We love this Hawthorn as it grows fast enough to form proper tree shapes fairly quickly. They are full of character and create beautiful specimen trees.  They have quite long thorns, but we remove these from the main trunks and only keep them in the canopy.  The trunks on them stay fairly thorn free after that and the thorny canopy creates a dense enough appearance in order to act as a bit of a screen during winter.

Relatively fast growing, it has beautiful white flowers which are large for a Hawthorn, which emerge from pink buds.  In the end of summer the canopy becomes covered in big, plump red haws, holding them late into the autumn. These berries are loved by birds and other wildlife, and although they aren’t particularly tasty can be eaten by humans too! Maybe they’re better if made into a jelly.  Along with the berries, Crataegus coccinea produces beautiful autumn colours with tones of yellow, orange and red. These features make it a truly spectacular tree with year round interest.
