Betula albosinensis ‘Fascination’ – White Chinese Birch

In stock

Betula albosinensis ‘Fascination’ or White Chinese Birch, is a slow growing, beautiful birch tree.  They’re small for a birch, and have a good broadly conical shape that makes it perfect for a smaller garden.  The best part of these is their fantastic bark. The multi-coloured (dark brown to orange to white) bark peels away in wide, paper-thin strips.  This reveals a cinnamon coloured underneath that fades to white. The canopy has plenty of flexible weeping branches dark brown in colour, which contrasts nicely against the lighter bark of the older stems.

Betula albosinensis ‘Fascination’ leaf up quite early in the spring and turn a beautiful yellow colour during the autumn months. The leaves are smooth green on top and slightly hairy underneath, creating a light canopy to give dappled shade. In April, this birch produces long yellow catkins. The root system doesn’t go deep and is very dense which makes them a great choice for shallow soil or planters. They aren’t too fussy with soil types, but do best in a moist, well drained spot.

For a larger birch with similar bark features, go to our Betula nigra page. Or for more trees with ornamental bark we have our Prunus serrula, Heptacodium miconoides and Acer griseum.
