Cornus kousa var. chinensis – Chinese Dogwood

In stock

It would be difficult to find a more beautiful shrub or small tree than this one. Cornus kousa var. chinensis produces the most glorious, windmill-shaped, large, white ‘flowers’. The ‘flowers’ are actually modified bracts and the dark centres in the middle are the flowers.  It is particularly striking in spring and will attract a lot of attention, as the display can be seen from quite a distance due to the size of the white bracts.

The drooping foliage of Cornus kousa var. chinensis is a talking point as the plant gives the impression of requiring water, but this is simply the way it grows.  In the late summer an abundance of small, red, edible fruits appear. These will attract a variety of birds to the garden, but if you can get to them first they’re a nice sweet treat!  The leaves turn an orange-red to a very dark, burgundy-red in autumn giving another beautiful display of colour.

Because these are grown from seed, there are variations in the way some of them look. This is most apparent in spring as some bracts are pure white, and others are bright pink. There are also less obvious variations in the leaf size, shape and colour.
