Pinus densiflora ‘Umbraculifera’ – Tanyosho Pine

Out of stock

Pinus densiflora ‘Umbraculifera’ is a very hardy species of Pine from Japan.  It has a naturally multi-stem shape which forms an umbrella-shaped canopy. They don’t become very large, no more than 4 metres high, so perfect for the smaller garden.  They’ll stand out as a small specimen tree and add year-round structure to any design as it’s evergreen.

The needles on a Pinus densiflora ‘Umbraculifera’ are very tactile, they’re incredibly soft to touch and not so pointy as other, low growing pines such as Pinus mugo. They are also quite strange in that they profusely produce pinecones that cover the stems. Sometimes they put so much energy into growing them that they kill off the needles on that branch, and sometimes even the whole branch. To prevent this, we lightly rub some of the cones off when they’re small. They usually fall off easily with little effort, and this keeps the branch alive.
