Why Winter is the Perfect Time to Plant Trees

Many gardeners assume tree planting is best left for spring, but January is actually one of the best months to plant our British grown, multi-stem trees.

We realise it may seem counterintuitive to get trees in the ground during the depths of winter, but this timing can provide young trees with a head start before the growing season begins. By planting in January, you’ll be setting your trees up for long-term success – giving them a head start before the growing season. This leads to stronger root development, reduced transplant shock, better establishment, and healthier growth in the long run.

Hear Philip, our Founder, explain more in this short video:

The Benefits of Winter Tree Planting

Dormancy Advantage

During winter, most deciduous trees are dormant, meaning they have slowed their metabolic processes and paused active growth. This dormancy period is the perfect time for transplanting, as trees are less likely to experience stress when moved. (This article explains more about transplant shock)

Without the immediate demand for energy to grow leaves and new shoots, the tree can focus entirely on establishing a strong root system.

Cool, Moist Conditions

One of the key challenges of planting new trees in spring and summer is the increased need for water. Newly planted trees require consistent moisture to establish, and the warmer months often lead to rapid evaporation and dry soil conditions. In contrast, January’s cooler temperatures and higher soil moisture levels help retain water, reducing the need for frequent watering and creating ideal conditions for root development.

Less Competition

In the growing season, trees must compete with weeds, grass, and other fast-growing plants for water and nutrients from the soil. During winter, much of this competition is dormant, allowing newly planted trees to take full advantage of available resources without being overshadowed or deprived of essential nutrients.

Practical Tips for Planting Trees in the winter months

Choosing the Right Trees

Not all trees are suited for winter planting, so it’s important to select species that can handle the colder temperatures. Most deciduous trees are suited for planting in the winter but most evergreen trees prefer warmer conditions. Hardy, deciduous trees such as birch, hawthorn, and rowan thrive when planted in winter. At New Wood Trees, all our trees are field-grown in British soil, making them particularly well-adapted to the UK’s climate and ready for planting in the winter months.

Preparing the Soil

Before planting, check that the ground isn’t waterlogged or frozen solid. Ideally, the soil should be moist but not overly saturated. If heavy rainfall has left the area too wet, it may be best to wait for slightly drier conditions before proceeding.

Post-Planting Care

While winter planting requires less maintenance than summer planting, newly planted trees should still be monitored regularly. Check soil moisture levels and water during dry spells if necessary. Keep an eye on weather forecasts, and if extreme frost is expected, consider adding extra mulch or using fleece to protect particularly vulnerable young trees.

Conclusion

Planting trees in January might not be the most obvious choice, but it’s one of the best decisions you can make for their long-term health. The combination of dormancy, ideal soil moisture, and reduced competition allows trees to establish strong root systems before the growing season begins. By following the right planting techniques and providing proper post-planting care, your trees will be well on their way to thriving for years to come.
