Ilex crenata ‘Dark Green’, also known as Japanese Holly ‘Dark Green’, a great replacement for Buxus, as very similar in appearance and doesn’t get blight or caterpillars. We raise their canopy to form small umbrella shaped topiary.
It’s a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its lush, small-leaved foliage and dense, rounded form. It typically grows to a height and spread of around 1-2 meters, so it’s perfect for low hedging, borders, and topiary work. It’s a popular choice for edging pathways, creating neat, structured garden rooms, or as a foundation plant around patios and entryways. In larger landscapes, it can be grouped or mass-planted to create a uniform, green expanse or planted singly as an accent shrub in mixed borders. This holly’s adaptability and ease of care make it a reliable choice for both formal gardens and more naturalistic designs.
