Magnolia ‘Susan’ is a relatively upright, medium-sized, deciduous shrub, with deep reddish-purple buds opening in mid spring to fragrant, cupped flowers. The flowers (which are edible!) are usually with 6 tepals, red-purple outside, and pink within. It’s not uncommon for these to flower multiple times throughout the year.
Magnolia ‘Susan’ are quite slow growing, and will do nicely in a large pot or planter. They’re very happy in full sun, but will tolerate some shade. They’re quite a hardy shrub, tolerating growing up in our nursery better than the other Magnolias. They even seem to do well in relatively windy spots.
We raise the canopy on these slightly to make small umbrella shapes that will grow into beautiful small trees. This can allow for underplanting so they can easily be used as a part of a wider scheme.
