July is an ideal time to spend a few minutes looking closely at your trees.

In this video, Philip demonstrates how a light summer prune can help maintain the shape and structure of a young hybrid oak. Rather than carrying out major pruning, summer is a chance to remove unwanted growth, improve the tree's form and encourage healthy development.

The techniques shown here are the same principles we use when training our own trees in the nursery. Small, thoughtful cuts made at the right time can make a significant difference to the way a tree develops over the years.

Whether you've recently planted a tree or you're looking after one that's been in the garden for a while, we hope this video gives you the confidence to pick up the secateurs and take a closer look.
