A beautiful native multi-stem tree, Acer campestre is not just from the British Isles but is distributed all over Northern Europe, even to Western Asia. It is deciduous and classified as a small to medium size tree, with very unusual bark. The bright yellow autumn leaves give a splash of colour before falling to the ground. It is a great native tree to grow in the garden as it does not grow too large and responds very well to pruning. At our tree nursery here in Devon, we grow Acer campestre as a multi-stem with raised canopies. We take special care to prune them on a regular basis to create beautiful, umbrella shaped canopies. The idea being that you can comfortably sit or even stand under them for some shade or for underplanting.Acer campestre, as well as Carpinus betulus, are great trees to use for screening as they have nice dense and even canopies most of the year. In the winter the crossing branches still provide an element of screening, but still let light through. These are very hardy trees and will tolerate most soil and environmental conditions. They seem to cope well with the hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. This makes them a great choice for the changing climate.

Can I order this tree online?

No, we don’t take orders via our website. Instead please contact us or submit a “request for quote” to start the buying process.  We will need to check
current stock availability and give you a bespoke price before you are able to
purchase from us.

Where do you deliver to?

We are situated in the rolling hills of South Devon, just outside Totnes (TQ9 6RR).

We have our own in-house delivery vehicles, regularly operating across the South West of England, in and out of London, and parts of the Midlands. For larger loads, or deliveries further afield, we also use trusted third-party hauliers to ensure your trees arrive safely.

Having our own delivery service allows us to control schedules and protect your trees, ensuring they arrive in perfect condition. Delivery charges are calculated on a cost-per-mile basis, so please contact us with your postcode for an accurate quote. Where possible, we also offer a shared load service to help reduce costs.

As a general guide, we can deliver as far north as Birmingham. Deliveries beyond this are possible, particularly for bulk or wholesale orders, but for one or two trees the cost may be prohibitive. We are always happy to provide a quote for deliveries further afield.

How does delivery work?

Please note that we are only responsible for the trees up to the point of delivery. Our drivers will assist with unloading the trees from the van, but they are not contracted to move them to the planting site, so you will need to make arrangements for this.

Rootballed trees can be very heavy so we recommend you have 2 or more people available to help move the tree from your kerbside into your garden.

We charge a separate delivery fee in addition to the cost of your trees.

When we provide a quote for your trees, we will include an estimated delivery cost (the maximum cost) but whenever possible, we combine deliveries to multiple customers in the same area and share the cost between orders.

We will be in touch to arrange your delivery once your tree is reserved and paid for, and when we are ready to lift it from the fields (if applicable).

The final delivery fee will be confirmed when your delivery is booked, and will be invoiced on the day of delivery.

How does the buying process differ with the seasons?

During rootball season (November - April):

We issue our catalogue and stock availability list for the coming rootball season at the beginning of September.  We are able to price rootball trees and you can reserve them from then onwards, however we don’t begin lifting them from the fields until they have gone dormant for the winter. This is usually November onwards but will vary from year to year dependent on weather conditions.

If you place an order in September or October we will tag your tree to reserve it, and be in touch as soon as we begin rootballing to arrange your delivery.

If you order from us between November and April we can usually schedule logistics at the point of order.

During the summer (May - October):

At the end of rootball season we lift enough trees to stock our container area enabling us to continuing supplying trees throughout the summer.  We pot them in peat-free compost and nurture them in our container area. We can take orders for these trees from April onwards, and deliveries of containerised trees commence in June/July (once they have had time to settle into their pots which is vital for reduction of transplant shock).

How will my trees arrive?

Your trees will arrive with their own rootball, wrapped in hessian and ungalvanised wire which we recommend you plant with the tree.  They degrade over time but give the rootball vital stability whilst the tree establishes.

Please see the following resources for more information on tree planting and care.

Do you offer advice on planting and tree care?

Yes we have detailed information on this subject here. We also provide this in a hard copy leaflet which will arrive with your tree.

Do you offer a planting service?

No we do not offer that service at this time. Our delivery driver will drop your tree to your driveway or kerbside, and you will need to make arrangements for what happens thereafter.
