Euonymus alatus, or Winged Spindle, is a large spreading shrub takes centre stage during the autumn months. The whole plant turns bright post-box red and stays like that for a couple of weeks,So a must have for anyone that likes to bring some autumn colour into the garden and doesn’t have space for large trees.
In spring, once the leaves have grown, small green flowers appear all over the plant. These are described as inconspicuous, but the amount of bees attracted to them makes you very aware that they’re there. These are followed by bright red/orange seeds, which are quite small oval shape. This is very attractive, especially after the bright red autumn leaves have fallen off and some of the seeds persist.
Another great feature of Euonymus alatus is the corky bark that appears on all the twigs. This is where the name Winged Spindle comes from. It gives them a very characterful appearance during the winter months and makes them seem almost prehistoric. The stiff arching branches give a very striking shape to any garden design.
