Pinus mugo – Mountain Pine

In stock

Pinus mugo or Dwarf Mountain Pine are attractive, prostate, large multi-stem shrubs that can eventually take the shape of a small tree.  As it grows along the ground, the stems and branches arch upwards. This creates a broadly conical shape with crooked stems. They’re very slow growing and while they’re small they all look very similar to each other. But as they grow, they take on wonderful, characterful shapes and can end up looking very unique. As they’re so slow growing they are quite easy to train. By tying stems to stakes or pruning you can, to some extent, control these final shapes.

Pinus mugo are a very hardy plant and will tolerate most conditions and soil types. They’re great for a coastal site where you need some interest on a lower level.  Their needles are short and firm, and usually quite a dark green, although we do get some variation.
